in august 2007, sivaji received the national film award for best actor at the 50th national film awards for his portrayal of sivaji.  in the same year, shankar received the national film award for best music director and the filmfare award for best music director for his work in the film. in the same year, the film was screened in the un certain regard section at the 2007 cannes film festival.
